Saks Fifth Avenue to exit the Las Vegas Strip

One of the anchor tenants of the Fashion Show Las Vegas shopping complex on the famed Las Vegas Strip will soon close its doors. Saks Global has decided to close the Saks Fifth Avenue store in this mall no later than May 31 of this year. For a city where luxury retail has long been part of the tourist experience, the news landed with weight.

Final days for the iconic department store
The store will cease operations by the end of May. This refers specifically to the Fashion Show Las Vegas location, the Strip’s largest mall, which for decades has drawn premium-segment shoppers. The exact date of the final day has not yet been specified, but the deadline is clear.

Is the store closure part of a broader crisis in Vegas’s entertainment industry?
Many link the store’s closure to the fact that Las Vegas’s tourist appeal has declined significantly amid the rapid growth of the iGaming segment. Online casinos offer the opportunity to gamble without spending time or money on flights or travel. A broad selection of games and a range of bonus offers make gaming platforms even more attractive to players.

To confirm this, we used data obtained from search engines. To obtain the necessary information, we visit page listing online casinos offering free spins. They are offered to players not only from the U.S., but also from Europe, Africa, and New Zealand. The site’s data made it possible to conclude that most major operators do indeed offer players no-deposit bonuses to attract attention. However, it is worth noting that such offers are aimed mainly at players who are not ready to spend a lot of money on gambling. This same category of people saves on trips to land-based casinos. That is, they are not the target audience for luxury stores. Meanwhile, tourists who can afford expensive purchases continue to visit Las Vegas, including to gamble at land-based casinos. This means the reason for Saks Global’s closure likely lies elsewhere.

70 employees to be laid off
All store employees will be laid off. According to official data, 70 people are affected by the layoffs. Saks Global, meanwhile, says it intends to offer transfers to other parts of the company where available. How realistic that prospect is amid a broader pullback of locations nationwide remains an open question.

The company issued a comment in which it emphasized respect for the employees being laid off. “As part of these measures and after careful consideration, we are parting ways with some of our talented colleagues. We are deeply grateful to these team members for their hard work and dedication, and we will support them as much as we can during this transition period,” the Saks Global statement said.

Shoppers hoping to take advantage of liquidation discounts should keep a significant caveat in mind. All purchases made as part of the store-closing sale are final. No returns or exchanges are possible.

How the decision came to light
Information about the closure and mass layoffs is contained in a WARN Act notice (a federal law requiring employers to provide advance notice of major layoffs) that was filed with Nevada state authorities. In addition, Saks Global confirmed the decision in a statement to local TV station KSNV.

Fifteen stores are closing nationwide
The situation in Las Vegas is not an isolated case. At the beginning of the month, Saks Global announced a large-scale wave of closures affecting several states at once. The numbers are substantial:

  1. 12 Saks Fifth Avenue stores are ceasing operations
  2. 3 Neiman Marcus locations will also be closed

Thus, the decision regarding Fashion Show Las Vegas fits into a broader strategy to reduce the company’s retail network.

Bankruptcy as a driver of change
All these closures are taking place as Saks Global goes through Chapter 11 proceedings, a U.S. bankruptcy-protection mechanism that allows a company to continue operating while restructuring its debts. The process gives the business breathing room from creditors and time to restructure its operating model. For Saks Global, this path means a painful but, in management’s view, necessary reduction in its physical footprint in favor of financial stability. The fate of the chain’s remaining stores will largely depend on how successfully the reorganization proceeds in the coming months.
