4 Sustainable Fashion Tips

It’s hard to make changes. We get into a routine – some might even say a rut – and although we know making changes is the best thing we can do, actually doing so feels uncomfortable, unpleasant, even too much of a challenge to bear.

Sustainable clothes

We have to get over this issue. Making changes to our lives that mean we can protect the planet is crucial, and every little thing counts, especially when everyone is doing something. With that in mind, a good place to start could be your clothing. Opting for sustainable fashion is a relatively small change that can make a big difference. Here are some sustainable fashion tips to help you get started.

Change Your Attitude
We all know the feeling of standing in front of an open closet full of clothes – some of which we’ve probably never worn – and saying that we have nothing to wear. If you’re like most people, rather than searching for a new combination of old clothes or putting on a tried and tested outfit, you’ll be tempted to buy something new. This is not a good idea when it comes to being sustainable.

Therefore, it’s much better to use the clothes you already have. We’ve mentioned trying out different combinations, and this is a great idea. You can also add some wonderful jewelry like nose rings to your outfit – jewelry can make clothing look entirely different even if it’s actually been worn many times before. Different make up styles, accessories, and changing the way you wear the clothes will also help.

Never Throw Clothes Out
What happens to clothing when you throw it out? In most cases, it will go to a landfill site and be a problem for the environment. Instead of throwing out old clothes, do something good with them. Options include:

- Giving to charity

- Selling

- Giving to friends and family

- Repurposing

When you do this, you’re not only helping yourself have a clearer, more usable wardrobe, but you’re also helping anyone who takes the clothes from you, and because there is less going to landfill, you’re helping the planet too.

Share Clothes With Friends
So you desperately want a new outfit, but you don’t want to buy something new because you’re trying to be good to the planet. What are the options? One of the best things you can do is set up a way to share your clothes with your friends.

Assuming you’re about the same size, you can have a pool of clothes that you share between you. In this way, you can all have new clothes when you want them, but no one has to buy anything. Everyone wins.

Buy From Sustainable Sources
Of course, at some point, you will have to invest in some new clothes; even the best items of clothing won’t last forever, and you can only mend them so many times before it’s just not worth doing anymore.

The best thing to do when you actually do need new clothes is to make sure you buy from sustainable sources. Don’t just head out to the mall and buy the first things you see; research different companies and how they offer sustainable clothing and buy from the ones who are doing the most to help the planet and the people on it.
