The West Saxon University of Applied Sciences of Zwickau (WHZ) brings together engineering, business, and social science programs under the guiding principle of a “University for Mobility”, with a particular focus on sustainability. It is a multidisciplinary academic institution for education and research. With a target of 3,500 students studying across its campuses in Zwickau, Schneeberg, and Markneukirchen in more than 50 different Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Diploma programs, it is a key pillar of the Saxon higher education landscape. The university’s eight faculties each make a significant contribution to this profile through their academic programs and research activities.
WHZ is one of the strongest research-oriented universities of applied sciences in Germany and offers a wide range of opportunities in research and teaching.
Thanks to its geographic location in “Europe’s electromobility capital” and in East Germany’s No. 1 automotive city, WHZ benefits from a strong and dynamic network.
With numerous national and international research and teaching partnerships, as well as a large number of regional companies as partners, our students, staff, and researchers gain access to deep experience and expertise. This ensures that students are optimally prepared for their careers, while researchers stay at the forefront of innovation. Teaching and learning are complemented by hands-on, practice-oriented exchange. Through this, we create interdisciplinary and sustainable synergies.
Only WHZ offers a fully integrated approach to teaching and research — from design to mass production, from initial idea to product design, through feasibility and economic viability analysis, to marketing, logistics, and mobility solutions. Collaborative research across diverse disciplines enables holistic problem-solving.
Additionally, we are the only university in Saxony that offers a Sign Language Interpreting program (Diploma). Nationally, we are also the only university that teaches various aspects of wood design and musical instrument making.
WHZ is aware of its social responsibility and contributes sustainably to the region’s development through its educational mission, research, and knowledge transfer activities. The university actively addresses regional challenges and promotes scientific, economic, social, cultural, and political life. WHZ views itself as an open and inclusive institution, committed to preventing any form of discrimination, actively promoting equal opportunities, and constructively embracing the social diversity and potential of its community.
